All coated abrasive products are compiled of backing, grain and a binder system.

The main types of backings used are cloth and paper; alternatives are vulcanized fibre, 

non-woven webs, stitch-bonded cloths and foils. 

The most important mineral types used are aluminum oxide and silicon carbide. 

In recent years, zirconia alumina and micro-crystalline sintered aluminum oxide

 made through sol-gel technology have also become more important. 

The latter is produced by Hermes today on the basis of the company's own patents,

under the designation Sapphire Blue® and further development work is proceeding on this product.
